Russian Empire. Late 19th-20th centuries. Thirteen-year-old nobleman and orphan Vanya Ogarev flees Moscow for Nizhny Novgorod, escaping assassins sent by his uncle, who is determined to seize the boy’s inheritance. For his protection, Vanya hires a fellow pugilist named Volchok, who he happens to meet. Volchok must help Vanya reach Nizhny Novgorod safely, where his father’s trusted friend awaits him. But the whole undertaking is in disarray from the very beginning: Vanya, a visionary, aristocrat, and aesthete, and Volchok, a rough, grim peasant, are at odds with each other. A dangerous journey awaits them, one that will change them both forever.
